"Water Pollutants and the Risk to Health If you want to have safe drinking water and also avoid the potentially harmful effects of inhaling water pollutants or absorbing them through your skin, a first step is to understand the kinds of pollutants that may be in your water. Let’s begin by dividing all water pollutants into two broad categories: nuisance pollutants and health-threatening pollutants. Nuisance pollutants are those that cause discomfort or inconvenience. They can cause water to taste, smell, or look bad, and they can render soap and washing less effective.
